  • OTA Summer Lunch at Keats Restaurant

  • 103rd OT Annual Reunion Dinner

  • SUMMER LUNCH AT KEAT'S RESTAURANT

    Date: Thursday, 22nd August
    Venue: Keats Restaurant, Ampfield
Time: 12noon for 12.30pm or thereabouts

    Keats
    Keats Restaurant Ampfield
Between now and August all those who have regularly attended plus those who attended for the first time last year will have been sent either an email or a letter giving full details of what is arranged. We can't provide such details at the moment because the only thing settled is the date. It is hoped to offer a three-course meal plus coffee for an outlay of as near £25 as possible. This event has been held for a number of years now and has grown in popularity to an extent that has both astounded and delighted us. It really is a pleasure to see so many of you coming back year after year. We would like to think that this year will be no exception. The lunch is an informal mid-year get-together for Old Tauntonians and their partners / friends and is held in very pleasant surroundings. Sometimes we have a special occasion or person to celebrate, sometimes we don't. But always there is the air of light heartedness and warmth that seems to be present when Tauntonians and their ladies meet. If you already know you wish to attend or would like to receive the details when known I shall be grateful if you will either phone, write or email to provisionally reserve a place or places (contact details below!). The main restaurant is limited to 70 places and recently we have filled it - with once having to overflow to another room! We look forward to meeting you later in the year.

    THE 103rd ANNUAL REUNION DINNER

    Date: Saturday 9 November 2013
Venue: The Southampton Park Hotel, Southampton
Time: 6.30pm for 7.00pm (although facilities to meet and greet will be available in the bar from 6pm)
Cost: £30 per head for a 3-course meal and coffee
Dress: Dinner Jacket or Lounge Suit. Miniature medals may be worn

This year the Chairman of the Dinner will be Ivor Weintroub (1958-65). His first five years at Taunton's were described as "only fair", and sometimes less, but having achieved a number of O'levels he moved from 5B1 to the sixth form. There he managed to obtain the History prize and a place at Birmingham University to read Law. On the way he carried the 1964 mock election as the Tory candidate against the national trend, without smoking a pipe or having a Yorkshire accent. His sporting attributes at school did not go beyond the Hockey 2nd eleven and scoring for the first cricket eleven. However he did write a two-person play giving a complete outline of the First World War in the end of year pageant, anticipating "Oh What a Lovely War" which, if nothing else, demonstrated that this very average schoolboy enjoyed himself immensely whilst at the school. He also for 5 years constituted a religious minority of one that seemed to make absolutely no difference, save that it meant listening to the announcements on the balcony with the Roman Catholics. On graduation from University and passing his Solicitors exams in 1969 he was admitted a solicitor in 1971 and made a partner in the Southampton firm to which he had been articled. In 1975 he married Irene, they having 3 children, including twin sons.

He appeared many times as an Advocate before his former Headmaster R P Challacombe without being put in detention. He progressed to be the Senior Litigation partner in his firm, having failed in an application to become Manager of Southampton Football Club, of which he has been a devoted supporter since 1955. In 1983 he was appointed a Deputy District Judge of the High and County Courts and in 1992 he was appointed full-time, originally sitting in Portsmouth, and then in Bournemouth, where he had moved with his family in 1984. In 2003 he was appointed a Recorder of the Crown Court and County Courts an appointment that continues, although he has now retired as a District Judge.

The Annual Reunion Dinner is open to all past and present members of the School or College. An application form for this function can be downloaded here as a pdf file and printed off. We are asking OTs to try and get these forms back to us (along with the necessary remittance!) by 20 October 2013 - this will help us enormously in the more detailed planning of this event. The application form will also be distributed to OTA Members with the September 2013 edition of OTA News & Views (N&V76).

A special rate of £40 (single room) and £60 (double room), including full English breakfast, has been arranged for overnight accommodation at the Southampton Park Hotel. It is essential to book ahead of the event. Please ensure that at the time of booking “attendance at the Old Tauntonians' Association Dinner” is specifically mentioned. Full details of the hotel, and all its facilities can be found on the website link above.
