Summer Lunch 2007

In the past two years, summer lunches have been held to mark specific events. In 2005 we said farewell to Jenny Fitton, while last year we celebrated Ken Carmichael's 90th Birthday. The lunches were well supported and enjoyable, and this led to a suggestion from our chairman, Roger Parsons, that a similar event be held annually.

This year's inaugural Summer Lunch was one at which we decided to specially remember Peter Wainwright. Peter's daughter Jacquie and her husband Derek were our guests.

The event was held at Keats Restaurant, Ampfield, on Thursday 16 August. In addition to Jacquie and Derek, 42 Old Tauntonians and their partners enjoyed an excellent lunch in the main restaurant, specially set aside for our use by the proprietor Daverio.

Daverio printed a special menu card that featured Peter's photograph and the phrase he so often used when there was any danger of someone leaving the bar, "Shall we have another beer for no particular reason?"

During the lunch we drank a toast to Peter, and Lindy Parsons later presented a bouquet to Jacquie. The emphasis throughout was on informality and all present seemed to enjoy themselves, as evidenced by the buzz of conversation. This was a very encouraging start to a new venture.
